PICTURED ABOVE ARE TWO STOCK THROTTLE BODY OF A 5.O FORD ENGINE. THE ONE ON THE "RIGHT" IS THE STOCK UNIT.
NOTICE THE" BLUNT" FLANGE WHERE THE HOSE CLAMPS ON.
DOES YOUR STOCK THROTTLE BODY HAVE THIS EDGE THAT DISRUPTS FLOW? MORE LIKELY?
YOU MAY FIND SOMETHING HERE...
THE UNIT ON THE "LEFT" WAS MODIFIED BY ME TO SEE THE NET EFFECT IN HORSEPOWER PRODUCED.
AFTER THIS WAS LOOKED AT FOR ANY MODIFICATIONS WE DECIDED TO "TAPER" THIS INLET ALA A "VELOCITY STACK".
NET RESULT? 11 HORSEPOWER ON OUR ENGINE!
THE RESPONSE AT LOW & MID RANGE WAS TREMENDOUS AND THE TOP END WAS NOTICEABLE. TAPERING THE EXIT OF THIS THROTTLE BODY ALSO HELPED, ALSO" THINNING" THE THROTTLE SHAFT WOULD ADD ADDITIONAL AIRFLOW AND MORE HORSEPOWER CAN STILL BE REALIZED.
BOLTING ON THE BIGGER AFTERMARKET 65 MM MADE 12 HORSEPOWER MORE FROM STOCK, 1 HORSEPOWER ABOVE THE STOCK MODIFIED UNIT ABOVE.
THE RESPONSE WAS NOTICEABLY SOFTER AND PULLED GOOD AT TOP END. IS THE 1 HORSEPOWER NOTICEABLE?
RUNNING THIS AT A ROAD COURSE AT WILLOW SPRINGS IN 2 IDENTICAL MUSTANGS SHOWED A VIRTUAL DEAD EVEN SCENARIO. AS THE MODIFIED STOCK T/B PULLED STRONGER FROM A CORNER AND THE 1 HORSEPOWER ADVANTAGE WAS BASICALLY NON EXISTENT ON THE STRAIGHTAWAY....
( IMAGINE IF WE THINNED THE THROTTLE PLATE SHAFT THIS WOULD EXCEED THE 65MM's POWER...)
THIS PROVES THAT IF YOU CAN PULL A LOT OF" AIR" IN A SMALLER HOLE YOU WILL HAVE GOOD "VELOCITY"! HENCE MORE POWER WITHOUT SACRIFICING RESPONSE.
A BIGGER THROTTLE BODY/ HOLE LOOSES "AIRSPEED" (RESPONSE) IF EVERYTHING STAYS THE SAME... ISNT THAT WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR HONDA/TOYOTA ETC WHEN YOU BOLTED ON THAT OVERSIZE THROTTLE BODY??? LOST A LOT OF RESPONSE?
this article is for normally aspirated engines. turbo/supercharged usually will not be noticeable as the pressured inlet will negate this situation.
